Networking Tip #109 -
Networking Revisited
In several of our TIPS newsletters we strongly urged networkers to show a keen interest in the "other guy/gal" and to forego promoting your product or service when you make the initial connection. Those of you who understand the behavioral style approach and have your V V S (vocal value statement) ready to use later on in the conversation, know the dramatic increase in success you will achieve. We hear from clients everyday as to how much these "soft skill" disciplines have increased their business.
Remember, the hard lesson that powerhouse producers know and practice everyday, is that it’s all about the other person. Start preparing to ask your next contact all about him or her. It will do wonders if you listen and not just hear their responses.
I have attended several networking gatherings in the last month and have met many networkers who promoted their products/services the instant we connected. Not only does this represent amateur behavior, but it is a stressful way to do business. Much to my delight, one networker was masterful in the way she made connections. When she approached, she made the conversation all about the other person by asking lots of questions. She held back promoting her product, handed her card to the contact and said, "I’ll be in touch with you". I later learned that after the event she sent out a note and placed a call to each person. I also learned that this woman is extremely successful and is a high six figure earner. Recalling our original conversation, she asked me what I do, how long I’ve been in business, what did I enjoy about my career, etc. She is a real
powerful "soft skills" networker.
Networking can be extremely rewarding if you discard the age-old, tired elevator speech. Develop skills in question-based networking, listening and using your V V S - Vocal Value Statement. If you have the need to learn networking soft skills and develop a V V S, call us and we will help you. There is no obligation. (800) 732-8076.
