Networking Tip #125
Easy Rules to Make Your Workday Productive
The Rules:
- Do the tough jobs first. It’s so easy to check your mail, do some filing, make a few calls etc. - putting off the tough stuff. Your “to do list” should be prioritized with the difficult tasks first. Getting the tough jobs out of the way early in the day will lift your spirits and make the remainder of the day a breeze.
- Be strict in keeping your list. Perhaps turn off your phone and check messages every half hour. Forget your emails as well checking them once an hour. There’s bound to be interruptions, some minor, some major (especially if you work in an office, plant or restaurant with lots of people).
- If you find networking important for your business, choose your networking events carefully. Some businesses need constant vigil, so try to attend after business hours or early morning networking events. Many associations, alumni groups etc. have Saturday and after hours events. I have recently discovered some lunchtime events that could serve you well.
- If your office is like mine, mail, email and ad mail, magazines and newspapers flood my office each day. In any case, remember the DDT rule! If the item needs immediate attention, then Do it, otherwise Delegate it or Trash it!
- Remembering our last TIPs newsletter, no marathon days, just sprinting! Grab some of the ad mail, the Wall Street Journal or a magazine to read at break time. I mention the WSJ because, like many businesses, I cannot exist without knowing what’s really going on!
- A cautionary rule! Return all phone calls within 2 hours. Reply to all important emails regularly. Allow sufficient time to arrive at appointments on time.
- Although you should think through situations and tasks before tackling them, don’t procrastinate.
- Be courteous to all visitors, callers etc. Converse in calm terms no matter how difficult a person becomes.
