Have you ever run in a Marathon?

Our family was very excited this week when our grandson and grand daughter-in-law participated in the Washington DC marathon for a Leukemia cure. Runners from all over the world descended on Washington.

The big day was Sunday at 6:30 am when they dipped into the Potomac River to swim one mile and then onto bicycles for twenty five miles, followed by a six mile run. Just the idea makes me dizzy!

Then the thought came to mind that many people in the workplace (including home-office people) are always in a daily marathon. For those healthy lean bodies in the athletic marathon it’s okay. But it’s shear nonsense and very costly for workplace marathons.

Workplace marathons bring frustration, stress and burn out. Take a break at work and manage your energy. If you have a rest area or employee kitchen or lounge then retreat to that area. Read, meditate, plan your weekend or vacation and relax.

A good example is when you drive a long distance (500 or more miles), health professionals recommend that you stop every few hours and rest.

In the workplace, you can work in sprints and not as if you are in a marathon. After an hour or two focusing on work issues, take a break.

OK, so your job is meeting deadlines. Then find time to take a break. Listen to music, walk outside or walk to the water cooler.
