Communication Skills in Selling
One wrong response to a prospect question can kill a sale and add to your frustration. Business has been booming in the last seven years and many sales people, entrepreneurs, business owners and service providers have forgotten effective communication disciplines now that the economy is slowing down. It’s harder to prospect, harder to make appointments and harder to close sales. Buyers are on the sidelines, many are playing the price game and some are just shopping. What should we do in the face of so much rejection?

During this time of contraction, it’s important to renew, refine and continue to develop your question-based prospect-centric communication skills and let the prospect talk! Nothing turns off customers and prospects more than a talking sales person or a rehearsed presentation that sounds like a pitch.

Those who ascertain a prospect’s behavior style are at a distinct advantage over the talking sales person. If your selling style doesn’t blend with the prospect’s style, chances are you may lose the sale.

Asking lots of questions is the only way for the new sales person or under achievers to get started. Powerhouse producers on the other hand know what questions to ask depending on the prospect’s style.

Did you notice your prospect’s behavioral style? Is the prospect or customer a perfectionist and hungry for details, or is your prospect a forceful person? Maybe you detect an enthusiastic and overly friendly person! Each of these styles requires a different line of questioning!

It takes time to learn the communication soft skills, but once you learn them you may wish you had discovered them earlier in your career. Customer-centric selling using adroit questions will change your selling culture and bring you success.
