Networking Tip #102 -
How to follow up with all those business cards you collect
Question: Joe, What do I do with all those business cards I collect?

Well I asked about twenty business friends what they do with business cards. Here's the results: Some store them wrapped in rubber bands. One person had about 1000 cards from years of networking. Others place them in a card file or into a data base. Others have no idea exactly where all the cards are and on reflection said they "saved" some in desk drawer. Some people dash out a quick email loaded with a commercial about their business. Some write a letter starting with a long boring litany of their products and/or services.

Here's some suggestions: Take the time to prioritize the cards...urgent follow up, follow up, no follow up etc. Depending on your product or services strive to make appointments but start with a telephone call.Don't , however talk about your business or do any selling. Once again focus on the prospect!

Here's the best method that we developed: Send a Business Greeting Card along with your business card and a hand written note in BLUE ink...."Glad to have met you or words to that effect" Hand address the envelope. Two days later, about the time of your note arrival, make a telephone call reinforcing the RBP. Also send an email with the same verbage as the note. Too much to do?? and the 42cent postage. Believe me it's worth it. If you need a useable sample of the greeting card we use just call us..we will shoot one out to you.

Some of the reasons people give me for not making that phone call:
  • They have my card, if they needed my product, they would call me.
  • I can make the call, but don't know what to say
  • You are afraid of being rejected
  • Why make a call, I'll only get voice mail. That's good, practice your script
  • Gatekeepers always block me. That's OK too. Ask us, we know how to handle that problem.
