Networking Tip #118
Making Connections

It always amazes me how many networkers consistently try to conduct transactions with other networkers rather than build a cadre of trusted advisors. People with whom you can build on their centers of influence.

Let’s start with who knows you and who do you know? Most importantly, who can you help and secondly who can help you. Let me give you some real life examples:

  • I have a client with an automobile business. In his employ was a highly qualified technician who ran into financial difficulty due to excessive gambling and subsequently lost his apartment. My client called me as his trusted advisor seeking help for his employee. I contacted the housing welfare head in my town who found temporary shelter for the employee.
  •
  • I needed help with a specialized type of business insurance so I asked my agent for assistance. She gave me the name of a carrier who was able to solve my problem. She received no monetary benefit for her help but enjoys being a trusted advisor status and a “go to person”. Are you a “go to person” helping others in your community, networking group, association or church?
  •
  • A client asked me about a specialized type of business loan he needed, and I referred him to a trusted advisor that I know who is a banker . Another client needed tax advice, and I referred her to another trusted advisor who is a CPA.

When you go to your next networking mixer, forget about your product or service momentarily, and ask people if they need your help with anything! Become that “go to person”. People will admire you as a trusted advisor!

A couple more examples:

  • I needed a place to conduct a breakfast and luncheon seminar. One of my trusted advisors not only recommended a few places, but she checked out seating arrangements and prices.
  •
  • Another contact of mine needed to host a webinar, and I referred him to a company that I know and trust.

So there is a time when we must stop the hype and the pitch, lower our self-orientation, and start building our status as the “go to person” and trusted advisor.

I can help you become that “go to person”. Give me a call toll free, there is no obligation. (800) 732-8076

All the best,
