Networking Tip #116

People constantly ask me about networking groups and I respond to their questions with the same advice.

First, I tell them there are all sorts of groups, some general, some specific and some niche groups. Recently my high school alumni established a network that spans nationwide and there are five alumni members right here in Northern Virginia. The newest edition of my college alumni directory provided a whole host of possibilities.

Within 35 miles of my office are a score of Chambers of Commerce networking groups, and dozens of chapters of national networking organizations as well as niche groups in Accounting, Technology and other disciplines.

My advice to networking members and those contemplating joining a group is as follows:
  • Avoid those groups that are heavily transactional.
  • Avoid groups in which you do not participate on committees etc.
  • Avoid groups that are unable to produce a large gathering.
  • Avoid groups which foster heavy self promotion by members.
  • Avoid groups which tolerate long "elevator speeches" and the like.
  • Avoid groups which allow persons to interrupt and show disrespect.
  • Do join groups that truly understand and foster building trust.
  • Do join groups that understand "centers of influence."
  • Do join groups where members are "trained" in the art of networking.
  • Do join groups where members have empathy for your near and long term goals.
  • Do join groups that build trusted advisors.
In one of the groups I belong to, a trusted advisor steered me to over a dozen speaking engagements. In another group a member bartered her graphic design for my sales and networking training.

Whereas I do not recommend groups, I tell people to try groups until they find one that fits their comfort level. You should find a group that provides gatherings to your liking!
